Hi all, We are sick of ending up on narrow roads or worse still last week it was a very narrow small bridge with a sharp right straight after it and with a 23ft van behind us. I wondered what the locals were looking at when we drove past. :rolleyes: We then saw the bridge and had to hold our breath, needless to say we were very lucky and just squeezed through. There were marks all along the bridge where it had previously been caught and so I can only assume we werent the first using a sat nav that had gone that way. We are now looking to buy a sat nav for towing as we are both not brilliant with map reading. Any advice really appreciated.

My advice is brush up on your map reading, I would never rely on a satnav when solo never mind towing.

Plan your route using Google Maps it couldn't be easier, if you dont like the route it chooses you can drag it to the way you want to go.

I don't know about brushing up on map reading I think you would be better brushing up on the highway code, because I am sure there would be a
sign saying narrow bridge with with ! before you got into too much trouble.

I don't know why people blame there sat navs as they are just a aid to directions, I have used them for many years and never had a problem (for my work I tow
a 7Mt trailor behind a 7MT van) If I get a route that I suspect is narrow or low bridge I take a diffrent route, and make sure I look out for warning signs

There was a sign but by then we were already on a very narrow road which turning round on would of been nigh on impossible. Yes it did say narrow bridge but as there was no going back we had to keep going. As I said we hadnt been the first, the bridge damage where people had clipped it when taking the sharp turn right off it. You are right though I could definately do with improving my map reading.

I'm not fully au fait with the ProNav but what I do know about it is it's expensive for what it is. At present, only UK maps are available for the ProNav but Euro maps are promised soon.

My suggestion would be that you could be better off getting a cheaper SatNav and installing the necessary POI's (Points of Interest) which can warn you of low bridges or roads unsuitable for HGV (and caravans likewise). POI's are free and this is all the ProNav basically is - a SatNav with suitable POI's already installed.

And also dont forget if using tomtom to turn off I,Q routing as this takes you some weird and wonderfull routes

Hi Luisa

Yes. I have bought one via the CC offer and yes it seems to work. I have tested on known routes/destinations with it set to car mode and the same route set to caravan mode and in all cases it sent me the correct route.
But having said that I have not tried it with the van on or on route unknown to me.

In car mode I have used it and yes it performed very well indeed,it is easy to use, campsites work well,blue tooth works well as does traffic updates.

Get one while you can.

I have a Pronav and find it takes me on a different route with or without the caravan as my wife found out when she forgot to change it back to car only and took a long route one day.http://www.caravantalk.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif

I have used the latest Pro Nav and it is the worst Sat Nav I have ever used. When setting the width to eight foot, it took my seven foot six caravan on a road with a six foot six bridge. Need I say more?

i tried to discuss this with Pro Nav but they showed no concern.
