Sat Nav For Caravans

Just thought this might interest some people , for many years I have been using different Sat Navs for driving generally and towing the van and while driving with the van at the back of my mind is the thought what if I end up down a lane that is to narrow. I think we must all have this thought while towing after seeing lorries being craned out to turn round .So with a car and van as big as a artic in most of our cases (40ft) trying to find a Sat Nav for lorries is limited and expensive (£700 for some ).
I have now found my answer from the company PRONAV sold by Halfords and Maplin for lorries which gives you the opion of putting in the size of your car and van in length and width and weight .It warns you even of areas of cross winds and hills and gives you overnight parking areas .I purchased a Pronav Europe ( they do a UK version for £199 & EUROPE version for £250) few months ago and have found it very good with not a hiccup not abroad yet and you can put in the default sizes in memory then just select the CAR or Car + CARAVAN . I know some Sat Nav give you some opions as to different types of routes ie motorway and shortest and quickest but this is a true large vehicle sat nav that is also for a car when you need it for a good price.
I think its worth having a look at their website .

Not had any problems when using TomTom with caravan. You just have to remember the caravan is on the back. I generally only use the TomTom until the point at which the printed directions to sites start, which is usually only a couple of miles away from site. Then the wife takes over! Can't get into any trouble that way, well you can with the wife when you ignore her directions!

I agree, virtually stopped using mine when towing, tends to take rather worrying shortcuts across main routes, can cause problems when towing a 24ft van.Gone back to map & site directions (which obviously take into account you are towing) when close to site

Hi Dave
These satnavs have been looked at before and I agree they give you the options to put in vehicle size but they will only work if there is a recorded low bridge or steep hill etc. As far as I know nobody has measured the width of all the roads in the UK. There are loads of roads that are too narrow for large vehicles and don't contain recorded problems.
The only way Pronav works is it has the current records loaded which you can get as Pois off the internet anyway from here. Will be interested in how you get on with it. Try taking your car down a known narrow lane and see if it stops you. I doubt that it will!

As JohnKS says the POI system is a good aid but not foolproof. The only way that you will be able to completely rely on a Sat Nav is when ALL roads are categorised and the routing software actually takes note of the roads and vehicles sizes and routes accordingly at present the POI system warns you of pending size problems but does not actually work out a route in advance taking into account road and obstruction widths and heights.
I know from information given to me some years ago that Garmin are keen to have a true width and height restriction system BUT until NAVTEQ (or some other mapping company) supply them with this information there is little that any Sat Nav programmer can do AND at the time I was told it would probably be at least ten years before this happened.
So meanwhile use you Sat Nav but do not leave your common sense at home.http://www.caravantalk.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/cool.gif
