Why are you updating the maps so soon after getting your Garmin?

sat navs are produced a while sometimes before purchased in shops, thats why they usually give you a one off upgrade.maps and software are more than likely out of date on date of purchase.yes, map replacements are slow, as there is quite a lot of data to download, and then the upgrade of the map to the sat nav itself takes a while. yes normal software updates are relatively quick.

I have always found the unit software upgrade and the operating system upgrade is reasonably quick BUT full European Map Sets can take a very long while on an on-line download BUT at least it basically looks after itself and you just need to check for messages every now and then! BTW I speaking about Garmin GPShttp://www.caravantalk.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif

Our download included the Europe maps as well as GB so that's probably why it took so long. It was done on a laptop through WIFI so I don't know whether it would have been quicker on the main computer.
The maps on the new Garmin were definitely out of date.

Just paid £100 for maps for life for my old Garmin then downloaded the New Europe / GB maps which took about 20 mins on my wifi laptop and after loading them then I had to update the software which took about the same time. I was toying about updating my sat nav but decided against for a while to see the long term reports on caravan friendly ones and if they work as I understand from the net the one the CC had an offer on has had very slow map response times and other issues.
