Having spent a fortune on diesel in one week for the Terrano £ 160. I am seriously codidering a more economical tug, it is pretty likely we will be moving soon so will both be doing more mileage. I would love a big auto such as a Sorento or a Rexton but I can't justify spending so much on diesel on a day to day basis. I have has a quick look at the suzuki and the fuel consumption seems good and the tow weight is fine for the van, although cant find a nose weight. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi what caravan are you towing I used to have a Grand Vitara DDIS and towed a Bailey Senator Indiana and it was fine and that weighed MTPLM 1500 it will tow more and weighs more so if you van is a little higher you will be ok, just stay clear of the petrol version

Our van is lighter at aroung 1250kg MTPLM. Being realistic what sort of mpg did you get from your vitara, and how reliable was it ?

Hi I probable got around 28-30mpg whilst towing but more when not. I found the car very reliable but then I would say that as I used to sell them before I sold caravans. but seriously you wont go wrong with a vitara I on the other hand am still using my terrano, if i had a smaller van now I would get a vitara but they just arnt strong engough to pull my twin axle

Hi Owen

I'm confused by your post.
In your 1st post you said the Vitara would pull a van of 1500kg MTPLM but now you say it won't pull your twin axle?
How heavy is your van?

Regards.
Col

Hi Col

Sorry was a bit vague I now have a sterling elite explorer and with a MTPLM of 1885kg is too much for it, the vitara will pull other twin axles but thoses that weight no more than 1685kg but that puts you on the 100%

I have a Suzuki GV 1.9 DDiS '07. It has covered 10K miles with no problems so far. The owners manual gives the following specs:-

Kerb weight = 1625Kg.
Recommended towing capacity for braked trailer = 1850Kg.
Nose weight = no more than 10 per cent of trailer weight.

I tow a 2 berth caravan with MTPLM of 1162 Kg., which pulls OK. I would consider the recommended towing capacity of 1850 Kg. to be a little adventurous.

I try to keep the nose weight of the van down to 80 Kg.

Driving solo the digital readout says 32mpg and when towing I get about 30 mpg. Not much difference.
