Most recovery companies will recover a trailer/caravan if the tow vehicle itself breaks down but will not recover the caravan itself if it breaks down so you need as said something like Mayday to cover the caravn as well .

& I have it in writing that Britannia (CSMA)will not recover the van in the case of a road traffic accident incapacitating the car as its the car insurers
reponsability. Or from a campsite / field which is why I had to use CC Red pennant when we went to France

To those who recommend Britannia Rescue's continental cover I would say - have you used it? Having used BR in the UK I was very pleased and relied on them for our 2006 visit to Italy. We had 2 breakdowns and BR's European agents were VERY POOR. A quick summary as I have related this at length previously.
Minor electrical fault in Italy - 3+ hours waiting for breakdown truck. That left us at a garage on a Friday evening that was about to close for 2 week's holiday. Long wait on pavement before breakdown truck driver returned on motorbike!!! Car finally taken away on breakdown truck and repaired.
On way home on Belgian motorway major autogearbox failure. Left on contraflo section in pouring rain for 2+ hours. When I complained phone operator said "sit in your car"???? or haven't you got an umbrella. Finally taken to campsite and car to garage. After nearly a week car supposedly repaired "only an oil leak". "Repair" lasted only 10 miles then back to campsite and car back to garage. Surprise, surprise gearbox failure. Car and caravan to be repatriated. Hire cars provided to get us home. Caravan to follow later. After numerous cancellation of caravan delivery arrived with £1000 worth of damage done in transit. Transporter in shocking state took wife and neighbours all morning to get caravan off truck as winch was broken. After long battle (6 months) BR did pay up for damage to caravan.
In 2007 broke down again near Rome. This time with Red Pennant. RP provide 3 towcars on the Continent to allow us to continue our holiday and sent a RH drive Landrover over to Calais for journey home.
RP was much more expensive but was it worth the extra YES, YES, YES!!!! BR on the Continent- No thanks!!!???

Re Pennant does it for me.
Yes it's more expensive and to date I've never had to use it and I hope I don't in the future.
But if I breakdown in the EU I want the best breakdown service working on my behalf and from the testimonials to date that (IMHO) is Red Pennant.

That's interesting as it seems to contradict the wording in the policy document:
Section D (12):"In the event of a road traffc accident we may ask you to contact your motor insurance company in the first instance to arrange recovery to ensure you receive your full entitlements. If assistance is not available for whatever reason, we will provide the services as shown under your cover entitlement."
My emphasis.
