My insurance (C&CC) doesn't care about CaSSOA, they just wanted to know if it ticked their 4 boxes (from memory it was perimeter fence, security lights, CCTV and daily inspection).

My choice was about balancing location and 24/7 access. There was a CaSSOA silver site but it was a 40min drive from my house rather than a 20min drive. There were two sites nearer than the one I chose but one didn't offer 24/7 access and the other was in an unattended remote site with no daily inspections, whereas the one I went with is attached to a very active logistics company with staff members on site most of the time. It just felt a lot more secure to me.

If I have my van owner's hat on I aren't sure I'd be happy leaving my van for someone else to park. Also, I'd have to give a spare set of keys for locks to be fitted. As a van owner that doesn't appeal to me.

Hi Steve

When I first stored my van on this site, van owners had access to the storage facility to park and retrieve their caravans. There was always the danger of a stored caravan being damaged by an adjacent caravan being inexpertly parked or retrieved. Personally I prefer my caravan to be in the hands of "professional parkers" (The site stores approx 200 vans). I believe that the parking and retrieval by the site owner's staff was implemented as one of a number of security measures insisted on by the site's insurers.

Another condition of the site owner's insurance is that they should fit the van owner's security devices whenever the caravan is unattended.

We were told by the CC when I took out our insurance that a discount would be made if I was to store my caravan in a CaSSOA approved site. We currently have our van in a unit with around a dozen others, in two rows of 6. It is not very practical as if your van is at the back the owner has to move the rest and he has the only key, making picking up and returning with the van a pain as it has to fit in with him! This costs us £9.00 per week, it has no CCTV and is not a CaSSOA site and the access is a bit on the bumpy side, you live and learn but we were grateful for somewhere to store it. We have since been and seen another 'all singing and dancing' site with all the proper security measures and is a Gold CaSSOA site with van cleaning facilities (free) and a half hours FREE use of electric a day, all for £520.00 per year. Only pitfall is because he can only store 22 vans there and the demand is so high I am on the waiting list, here's hoping I get in soon!http://www.caravantalk.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Made no difference to my insurance either.
It did make a difference to the storage costs, went up by £40 a year, when site got up graded to Gold standard, still trying to find out why it was upgraded as nothing has changed as far as I can see.

Steve W

I have just made a posting about this on a different thread - above. It asks if anybody can get a list of the criteria for the Cassoa awards. Following the vandalism of an attempted burglary at a Silver site,I have been in touch with Cassoa and (to date) have not received a clear answer. There is an inspector, who seems a pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful guy. They have a complaints form and procedure, but that does not answer my questions about what we are paying for and what policing policy is in place to retain standards of security.

I think that we should all become a bit more curious about what is, after all, a sort of private club formed by storage site owners.

When I bought my caravan I applied for insurance. They of course asked about storage. I said it would be secure storage. They asked about security measures:

12 ft high alarmed fences
Floodlights
CCTV
Guard Dog Patrols
2 sets of gates - 1 locked and one manned 24 hours
Security Patrols
Armed Guards...

I park mine in a secured area on an Army Barracks!

I got my discount.....

Lots of interesting comments.

we have just bought a NEW van , and i am astounded at the cost of insurance!!
(caravan guard and CC ins scheme)
10% for this 5% for that 10% here 5% there and i'm still being quoted £350 as a mimimum!!

i can't store on my driveway because the A frame would be over the pavement or through the garage door

I can leave it at my Dads 2miles away, A frame in first, busy main road near traffic lights and lots of curtain twitchers.

I intend fitting a JSBhublock and using a nemisis(used) on site, unless i can drop on a AL-KO lozenge for a Lunar 2010 at a reasonable price.

Looks as if i need to speak to Towergatebakers and a few more now B)

I could get £10 off my insurance, instead I chose a storage site which I feel is more secure but not CASSOA .... this is why

  • In the ladies 'back garden' so as she's retired she watches my caravan daily and 60+ others
  • CCTV
  • Haulage trucks are dropped in front of the gates, to get my van they need to move them first
  • Access whenever we need to, no quibbles
  • Employee working on site every day
  • Half the price of local CASSOA sites

I would NEVER want my caravan at home, I know when a neighbour is away, that makes me feel too uncomfortable to leave mine at home. If it needs a bubble bath we usually bring it home after a holiday but our storage site offered for us to use electric/hoses etc there if we ever need to. They are really nice.
