I'd been out bike riding all morning, when I came home I had lots of missed calls.
Your caravans been stolen,(kept under cover at a friends) they've called the police and now I've got a number.
Scenes of crimes finger printed the bent hitch lock, no good?
I tried to call the CC and Devit but there appears to be no out of hours number?

We've never made a claim before and are unsure what to do. What do we do next?
We have 5C's cover and the van was April 2007 Senator Oklahoma.

BTW, A Transit van may of been used???

Hi Gary,

Sorry to hear that your pride an joy has been stolen!

Now you have a crime number you need to contact Devitt's first thing Monday morning and let them know.

You will have to fill in a claim form (it should be with your insurance policy documents) giving details.

They will then let you know what else is required from you.

Sad news indeed. nothing much you can do now except what GPS said wait until Monday then ring the claim Department give as much detail as you can. you should not have any problem with the C C.

hi sorry to hear your bad news. we also had our 3 month old bretagne stolen last march.but we had our new van by the end of may so it was not that long even though it seemed a lot longer.i dont know about your case but our great police force were less than intrested. :( .

what upset us the most was the personal stuff that was in it.that will never be replaced, and now our insurance premium is over twice the original amount.

thieving b******s need their hands chopping off.

Gary,

Sorry to hear the news, we got our Oklahomas at the same time.

We are with the CC and when our old van was written off they were great.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Kind Regards

Dave

The good news is that you have CC 5cs insurance, they will settle the claim at least as quickly as any other company and since the van is less than 3years old you will get new for old replacement providing that you have kept the value of the caravan current. It is not good to have to deal with this sort of thing but at least dealing with the CC you are dealing with the best.

Gary, sorry to hear of your misfortune. Before you ring the CC in the morning, read your Policy booklet from cover to cover, so that you are fully conversant with whatever requirements they have stipulated.

As one who has suffered the same fate, I can commiserate with you.
We stored ours on the drive, so nothing was ever taken out after a trip other than fresh food and clothing. In fact there was stuff in there which had never been taken out from previous trips because they were not needed in the house, i.e. 2 pairs of new Italian leather shoes.
We went from locker to lock listing everything which was in it, and, apart from caravanning equipment. (awning, water containers, etc.) The total came to over £7000. (£450 dinghy, £250 TV, £150 radio, £250 satellite, £100 cadec, things soon mount up. and the irreplacable thing like Silver wedding video, mementos from Hols.
Theft took place 10th May and CC insurance paid out 13th June, the other stuff claimed on household insurance took another couple of weeks.
25 years without any claim resulted in, loss of no claims bonus for 5 years, additional security required by CC (tracker, and other items) £1000, loss of bonuses with household insurance because I had a burst pipe in the house around the same time, the extra cost of replacing a 3year 3 month old van with a new one. and cost of replacing items not covered on insurance.
I reckon my fully insured theft cost me £7000.

Thanks everyone for the support.

We Have the 5Cs cover but no contents, the van is 35 months old so we should just about be covered.
I'm hoping we will end up with the later Pegasus and not an ex demonstrator Senator which has been hanging around a dealership for the last six months? We also looked at the Olympus 534 which is the same as the Pegasus 534 but a bit narrower? Opinions welcomed?
Looking through the CC booklet, on the last page it mentions that I will loose 20% of my discount at next time of renewel? (an I correct?)

What paper work do the insurance company want, Criss certificate, service bills and receipt I suppose.
Thanks people.

Gary,

You are lucky if it is only 35 months old as you are covered by new for old.
Our Oklahoma has got damp in the roof both front and rear and we are trading it in for a Pegasus 534 which we pick up a week on Thursday.
Unfortunately we are having to pay quite a lot for the exchange, so if you get a replacement, even though there is hastle you will end up saving a lot compared with us!!

Best Wishes

Dave

We had a bit of damp found last service, April 2009. Our dealer was very good and by September it was fixed (two new awning rails, one roof rail and complete rear panel) hence why it was stored under cover but away from home.

Gary I can only hope that things are sorted for you quickly & you end up better off & with a new van which is covered with a 10 year warranty against dampness
posts like this relating to stolen vans & dampness in relativly new caravans depress me.I wonder sometimes if caravaning is worth it. :(
as to the risk of it being stolen Might I suggest the following Item particulary if used for long term storage

I have recently bought one & am quite impressed with it http://www.jsbhublock.co.uk/

Good luck Tony

I had the loss adjusters on to me, asking for keys and photos and a plan where it was stored. I've sent that off.
If I do get new for old? Can they source an old stock/ex demo Senator. There must be one somewhere in the country.
I would like a new van, ideally a Pegasus and pay any difference.
My policy does state new for old.

Hi Gary,

I questioned this with the Caravan Club as our caravan model and layout is no longer in production.

We discussed which production caravan was the nearest spec to ours and this was used for valuation purposes.

As there is no longer a Senator in production you should (hopefully) be offered an altenative up to the insured amount.
