As my service from THREE has been appalling the last couple of days, and I cannot wait for however long it takes their techies to resolve the problem (or not), I've crossed the floor to VODAFONE for now... one of the little pleasures of PAYG!

But when sending emails to hotmail users I sometimes have the mail returned as undelivered/rejected with the following details

Quote

> <email-address> Failed; 5.3.0 (other or undefined mail system status)
>
> Remote MTA mx4.hotmail.com: network error
>
> - SMTP protocol diagnostic: 550 SC-001 Mail rejected by Windows Live Hotmail for policy reasons. Reasons for rejection may be related to content with spam-like characteristics or IP/domain reputation problems.

When sending emails under Vodafone Payg, I have had my Outgoing mail (SMTP) server set to 'send.vodafone.net' but, as a work-around to this problem, I have to change it to 'smtp.gmail.com' and send the email from my googlemail account.

Does anyone perhaps know if VODAFONE are ever going to provide a permanent solution to this, or what this permanent solution may be?

Andy

I often have trouble sending mail via my Vodafone dongle and usually resort to using webmail. Funny thing is I can send mail via a WiFi connection with no problems at all. Did you know that Vodafone have a forum for such problems here http://forum.vodafon...hp?showforum=53

Thanks David, I wasn't aware of that forum, and have now registered on it. Most mobile broadband (dongles) discussions seem to be found at http://forum.vodafon...hp?showforum=17 and having read quite a few gripes from other folk (many of which relate to emails actually disappearing into the darkness of the etherweb) I think Vodafone accept they have problems with delivering emails sent from Vodafone Payg. One similar related discussion is here: http://forum.vodafon...=52613&hl=SMTP.

I have posted my problem at http://forum.vodafon...showtopic=53898 and see that there has been a response which I still need to digest.

Btw, your approach of resorting to using webmail may well be the most reliable of all!

Yes, I've had exactly the same problem sending email from my mobile phone - a few of my friends said emails were blocked by their spam filters.

The problem is whenever you connect to the mobile phone network you get an IP address assigned to identify you. But at some point in the past the same IP address was given to someone else who used it to sent spam emails. PAYG networks seem to be popular with spammers since they can't be identified.

Then when enough hotmail users receive these spam emails and mark them as such, hotmail decide that the IP address they came from must belong to a spammer, and they block it. Which is then tough luck for the next person to be given that IP address!

I was lucky and found a solution - because I work in IT I have my own web and mail server, and I programmed it to receive my emails and then resend them from a different IP address. But that doesn't help anyone else :(

The other solution, as already mentioned, is to use webmail - then the email comes from the webmail's IP address, not the PAYG IP address.

I suspect the reason why this doesn't affect wifi access so much is that you normally have to log in to an account for wifi, so spammers are less likely to use it as they could be identified.

I sometimes wonder how Vodafone have grown so big! I looked at you post and the first reply you got. The guy seems to be suggesting that when you get to the point of registering that it makes not difference what make of phone you enter! Given that the bulk of internet use must be via dongles why no option. I will be interested to hear how you get on if you decide to sign up to 360.

Richard,

The way you have described things above would explain why my emails are not-always rejected. Thanks for the explanation.

David,

I have followed the "360" route with success... so far at least! I use Outlook Express and for anyone wanting to give it a bash, I followed the instructions below:

1. Register for a new "360" account at vodafone360.com... The online form does not include any dongle models, so select a mobile phone model at random but still enter the mobile number that matches your dongle.

Once this new account registration is complete:

2. Change "Server" settings under Outlook Express (OE):

-a. Click >Tools>Accounts>Mail>(click-on-your-default-mail-account)>Properties>Servers, which should take you to the correct Server tab to make changes, and under this tab do the following:
-b. Change the Outgoing-Mail-(SMTP) to SMTP.360.COM
-c. Under "Outgoing-Mail-Server" near the bottom of the same (Server) tab, tick that "My-server-requires-authentication" and then click on the "Settings" icon to the right and under that:
-d. Tick Log-On-Using and then enter your new 360 account-name (something like BlaBla @ 360.com) and it's password and also click "Remember-password"
-e. Click Apply and Click OK

3. Change "Advanced" settings under Outlook Express (OE):

-a. Click on the >Advanced tab and do the following:
-b. Change Server-port-number Outgoing-Mail-(SMTP) to 465
-c. Click This-server-requires-a-secure-connection(SSL)
-d. Click Apply and Click OK

And a bonus of using this method is that I no longer have to change the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server whenever I swap dongles/networks to get the best available service in a given spot... The Authorised 360 Server method seems to handle this OK.

Good Luck,
Andy

Thanks for that. I have printed it off and will give it a go next time I use the dongle.
